Things to do over the Spring Holiday Season
Spring weather has finally arrived and with warmer days comes even more opportunities and ways to spend time with friends and family.
If you’re planning a holiday, whether it’s a getaway over one of the bank holiday weekends, an extended break over Easter or the late May half term, there are so many events to participate in that you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Whether you enjoy hiking a nature trail, walking through fields of bluebells, visiting displays of colourful tulips, or taking part in a massive, organised Easter Egg hunt, you’ll be able to find something to entertain you and your fellow holidaymakers.
Once home to kings and queens, and a favoured palace of King Henry VIII, Hampton Court Palace is a riot of colour every spring, as it plays host to the Tulip Festival, one of the largest tulip displays in the country. More than 100,000 bulbs will be blooming to form a carpet of colour in the palace gardens.
Every Easter, Salisbury Cathedral organises and runs a Children’s Easter Trail that takes people through the cathedral and its expansive grounds. This event runs throughout the whole of April. For a week in May, the cathedral is host to the annual flower festival. In 2025, the theme is the Spirit of Water, taking inspiration from the power of water in all its forms. This festival will include displays that fill the entire cathedral.

If you love classical concerts, enjoy the theatre, or want to take part in something cultural and crafty, at the end of May, the Salisbury International Arts Festival takes place. So, you can take in the natural beauty of Salisbury and the surrounding area while enjoying an array of arts at the festival.
Are you a big fan of cinema? If so, London is host to a number of outdoor cinema events, with cinemas popping up on lidos, rooftops and other outdoor venues across the capital from early in May, with lighter evenings and warmer weather being a catalyst. Of course, if you love the idea of watching a film outdoors year-round, the Rooftop Film Club has started Fireside Films for the winter months.
Just in time for the late May Bank Holiday, and to coincide perfectly with the Chelsea Flower Show, two areas of London, Chelsea and Belgravia, launch their seasons ‘In Bloom’. Stunning floral displays take over the suburbs, with dramatic installations situated outside shops, restaurants and cafes around the area.

Holidays are all about spending time doing the things you want with the people you love and taking a walk in nature is, for many, a time to appreciate all of these things. Mid-April brings with it the beauty of bluebell season. With a carpet of pale bell-shaped flowers at your feet there is nothing that says spring more than a bluebell walk. Forests all over the UK are home to these beautiful spring blossoms, and though many locations are kept secret by locals, there are a number of places, and organisations including The National Trust, and the Forestry Commission, that open their fields and woodland to the public.

May is a busy time if you’re visiting the coastal city of Brighton and Hove, with the start of the annual Brighton Festival, and the Brighton Fringe Festival, England’s largest annual arts festival. The two events run concurrently with events ranging from plays, poetry, dance, art exhibitions, musical performances and stand-up comedy acts. Both events take place throughout the whole of May at venues across the city.

The weekend before the late May bank holiday every year, Birmingham is filled with bright, loud and fun parades, parties and performances as the city celebrates Birmingham Pride.
